UK Post Office Horizon IT Scandal Inquiry Hearing

Evidence is being given at an inquiry launched in 2021 that is examining what action was taken against sub-postmasters. Hundreds of post office operators were accused and convicted of stealing money when in reality there was a fault in the Horizin IT system. Some were even imprisoned. They are finally to receive compensation and have their convictions quashed by parliament within months in an unprecedented move designed to draw a line under one of the biggest miscarriages of justice in British history.

Karen Read Trial

Karen Read, a financial analyst and college professor, is facing charges of second-degree murder, manslaughter while operating under the influence and leaving the scene in the death of her boyfriend, Boston Police Officer John O'Keefe. O'Keefe's bruised, frozen body was found on the lawn of Boston Police Officer Brian Albert on the morning of January 29, 2022. Prosecutors say Read and O'Keefe, 46, argued drunkenly in her car as she was dropping him off at a friend's house party after a night of barhopping. They allege she intentionally backed her Lexus SUV into O'Keefe in a rage, leaving him to die in the snow. Read claims that she and O'Keefe had been drinking with his friend Jennifer McCabe, whom Read did not know well, at the local bar. Around midnight, McCabe invited the couple to the home of her brother-in-law Brian Albert, a retired Boston Police Fugitive Unit commander detective. Read says she dropped O'Keefe off there then drove to his home in Canton, where the officer lived with his orphaned niece and nephew, and went to bed. Later she returned to the Albert home and saw O'Keefe's body on the lawn. Read denies killing O'Keefe and claims she's being framed by people who were in the suburban party house. There is an ongoing federal probe of a possible police cover-up in the case.

Young Thug Trial

Young Thug, whose real name is Jeffery Williams, and five other YSL members - Marquavius Huey, Deamonte 'Yak Gotti' Kendrick, Quamarvious Nichols, Rodalius Ryan and Shannon Stillwell - face trial on racketeering and gang-related charges. Several of the original co-defendants took plea deals in the case. Gunna, Lil Duke, Slimelife Shawty and YSL co-founder Walter Murphy were released from jail after accepting plea deals. Young Thug's brother Unfoonk also agreed to a plea deal. Young Thug has remained in jail since his arrest when he was indicted for conspiracy to violate Georgia's RICO Act and participation in a criminal street gang. Prosecutors claim Young Thug's YSL Records served as the front for a dangerous street gang. After an updated, 65-count indictment was filed August 2022, Thug himself is now facing eight counts, including one count of participating in the RICO conspiracy; one count of participating in a criminal street gang; three counts of violating the Georgia Controlled Substances Act; one count of possession of a firearm while committing a felony; and one count of possession of a machine gun. Some of the most serious accusations in the indictment center on the 2015 killing of Donovan 'Big Nut' Thomas Jr., who prosecutors say ran a rival gang in Atlanta. Five YSL members were directly charged with the murder, while Thug himself was accused of renting the car that was used to commit the killing. In one allegation, the indictment claims that two other YSL members discussed 'how to obtain permission' from Thug before attempting to murder rival rapper YFN Lucci (Rayshawn Bennett) while he was in jail. If convicted on the RICO charge, the defendants face prison sentences anywhere from five to 20 years. Other charges, if proven, could mean additional prison time.

Adam Montgomery Sentencing

Adam Montgomery was charged with second-degree murder; tampering with witnesses and informants - which he allegedly did by attempting to coerce Kayla Montgomery, his estranged wife, to lie to investigators; falsifying physical evidence; and abuse of a corpse in the death of his five-year-old daughter, Harmony, as well as second-degree assault charges for a separate incident involving the child. Prosecutors allege that Harmony was murdered on December 7, 2019. Adam, Kayla and Harmony were living in a car. Investigators allege Adam beat Harmony to death in a fit of rage after she had a 'bathroom accident' in the car. Kayla Montgomery, told detectives that Adam repeatedly struck Harmony, who was 5 at the time, in the head in frustration over the accident. Kayla stated that Adam delivered sets of three-to-four blows with a closed fist to Harmony's face/head on three separate occasions over the course of a few minutes'. Harmony died in the car a short while later, at which point Adam and Kayla placed her 'lifeless' body into an Under Armour duffle bag before transferring her body into a cooler. Harmony's body was moved to various locations over the course of the next several months. Kayla told investigators that in either March or May of 2020, Adam rented a U-Haul and during the overnight hours, made a trip to an unknown destination and disposed of Harmony's dead body. Harmony's body has never been found. In a plea deal, Kayla pleaded guilty to unrelated perjury charges and agreed to cooperate with prosecutors in the investigation into Harmony's death. She received a sentence of 3.5 to 7 years in prison, with 1.5 years of the minimum suspended and given credit for time already served.
