Jose Ibarra Trial
Jose Ibarra, an undocumented migrant from Venezuela, is charged murdering 22-year-old Georgia nursing student Laken Riley. Riley was killed while jogging at the University of Georgia on 22 February, 2024. Riley’s body was found near Lake Herrick after she didn’t return home from a morning run. A 10-count indictment accuses Ibarra of hitting the 22-year-old Augusta University College of Nursing student in the head, asphyxiating her and pulling up her clothing with the intent to sexually assault her. Ibarra is also accused of attempted rape and spying on another student. Investigators say they were able to identify Ibarra as a potential suspect when they searched his brother’s apartment, where he lives. During the search, two of Jose Ibarra’s cell phones were seized but were not searched until a later warrant was obtained. Ibarra was arrested that day on an outstanding warrant before being charged with Riley’s murder.

Deamonte Kendrick and Shannon Stillwell Trial
Young Thug, whose real name is Jeffery Williams, and five other YSL members - Marquavius Huey, Deamonte 'Yak Gotti' Kendrick, Quamarvious Nichols, Rodalius Ryan and Shannon Stillwell - faced trial on racketeering and gang-related charges. Young Thug, Marquavius Huey, Quamarvious Nichols and Rodalius Ryan made pleas midway through trial. Other co-defendants made plea deals before trial. Gunna, Lil Duke, Slimelife Shawty and YSL co-founder Walter Murphy were released from jail after accepting plea deals. Young Thug's brother Unfoonk also agreed to a plea deal. Young Thug was released after his plea. They faced conspiracy to violate Georgia's RICO Act and participation in a criminal street gang. Prosecutors claimed Young Thug's YSL Records served as the front for a dangerous street gang. In a 65-count indictment Thug faced eight counts, including one count of participating in the RICO conspiracy; one count of participating in a criminal street gang; three counts of violating the Georgia Controlled Substances Act; one count of possession of a firearm while committing a felony; and one count of possession of a machine gun. Some of the most serious accusations in the indictment centered on the 2015 killing of Donovan 'Big Nut' Thomas Jr., who prosecutors say ran a rival gang in Atlanta. Five YSL members were directly charged with the murder, while Thug himself was accused of renting the car that was used to commit the killing. In one allegation, the indictment claims that two other YSL members discussed 'how to obtain permission' from Thug before attempting to murder rival rapper YFN Lucci (Rayshawn Bennett) while he was in jail. Now only Deamonte 'Yak Gotti' Kendrick and Shannon Stillwell remain on trial.

Susan Smith Parole Hearing
Susan Smith, 53, is serving a life sentence for killing her children - three-year-old Michael and 14-month-old Alex - by letting her car roll down a boat ramp and into a South Carolina lake with them inside. Now, she is asking a seven-member parole board via video to release her from prison. She is eligible for a parole hearing every two years now that she has spent 30 years behind bars. A decision to grant parole requires two-thirds of board members to vote to release her. In October 1994, Smith claimed she was carjacked late at night and that a black man drove away with her sons inside. For nine days, Smith made tearful pleas for Michael and Alex to be returned safely - even though they had been in John D Lake the whole time. The traffic light where Smith said she had stopped when her car was taken would only be red if another car was waiting to cross but Smith said no other cars were around. Other parts of her story also did not make sense. Smith ultimately confessed to the murders and admitted she watched them drown. Prosecutors said she murdered the boys because the man she was having an affair with - the wealthy son of the owner of the business she worked at - broke off the relationship because she had two young children. Smith avoided the death penalty after claiming she was suffering a mental breakdown and that she was the victim of sexual assault by her stepfather. Smith's ex-husband and father of the children, David Smith, as well as the prosecutor at her murder trial, will urge that she remains behind bars.

Jennifer Adkins et al Vs Idaho State Lawsuit
Jennifer Adkins and several women and doctors have a lawsuit against the state of Idaho over the state's near-total abortion ban claiming that the ban has harmed them. The plaintiffs include four women who were denied abortions in Idaho and sought care elsewhere. They argue that the laws are enforced at the expense of Idaho women. A grim and explicit argument is being made by attorneys representing the state, which has faced numerous lawsuits over abortion since the U.S. Supreme Court overturned national abortion protections in 2022, triggering Idaho laws that restricted the procedure. The plaintiff say that 'the critical question is: Who should be able to receive abortions under the medical exceptions'? And say that 'two years after the laws were passed, no one has offered an answer'. Adkins has claimed that she was unable to get an abortion in Idaho so long as her baby had a heartbeat causing her to feel devastated. Her baby had multiple severe anomalies that affected several different organ systems and would not survive the pregnancy. After being denied an abortion, days later she went to Seattle for the abortion, where she attended procedures alone while her husband stayed with their toddler at a nearby hotel. Doctors claim they have had to delay patient care and deny treatment out of concern for breaking the law and describe the situation as 'perilous confusion' that forces health care professionals to flout their obligations and put patients at risk.
