George Soros intrudes in Colorado district attorney race

A political action committee with links to financier George Soros is hoping to defeat Jefferson and Gilpin County , 1st Judicial district, District Attorney Pete Weir by funding detrimental adverts.

Colorado’s voters elect a district attorney every four years and is the only state in the country with term limits on district attorneys. Colorado is divided into 22 judicial districts, with diverse geographies, demographics and crime patterns. Filling the position of district attorney is accomplished by partisan elections strictly limited by Colorado’s stringent fundraising and expenditure rules.

Hundreds of thousands of dollars are being used to pay for negative adverts by George Soros, a multibillionaire, against incumbent District Attorney Pete Weir (Republican). Weir’s Democratic opponent, Jake Lilly does not support these adverts.  The ads portray Weir as a careless prosecutor who is soft on sex offences and repeat DUIs.  Weir, and his office, have a reputation among the law enforcement community for toughness and professionalism.
