Michael Lang Trial

Michael Lang is being tried on one count of first-degree murder in Iowa State Patrol Sgt. Jim Smith’s death, and one count each of attempted murder and assault on a police officer for allegedly shooting at troopers in their armored vehicle.

Sgt. Smith was leading an arrest team into a Grundy Center home where a man accused of assaulting a police officer had barricaded himself. Sgt. Jim Smith was shot and killed.

Lang claims he acted in self-defense. If convicted, Lang will face life in prison.
