Former Dallas police officer Amber Guyger, 31, is charged in the September 2018 fatal shooting of Botham Shem Jean.
Guyger was off duty but still in uniform when she went into Jean’s apartment at South Side Flats.
Jean, 26, lived one floor above Guyger at the apartment building. Jean was inside his own home the night of Sept. 6, 2018, when Guyger shot and killed him.
Guyger told investigators that after working a 13-hour shift, she mistakenly parked on the wrong floor of the South Side Flats apartments, a block away from Dallas Police Department. She walked down the wrong hall to the wrong door and saw what she told detectives looked like a silhouette in what she thought was her home.
Thinking the person was a burglar, she fired her gun twice, striking Jean once and killing him.
Guyger faces up to life in prison if found guilty of murder. Guyger has requested probation if she is convicted of a lesser offense.
