An inmate was shot and killed after an officer-involved shooting at the Vanderbilt Women’s Clinic at 100 Oaks Mall in Nashville.

Officials said the shooting happened Wednesday afternoon.

Metro Nashville Police said a convicted bank robber stabbed a deputy during a bathroom break Wednesday at a Vanderbilt clinic at One Hundred Oaks Mall.

Inmate Rodney Cole, 37, died at the scene. Robertson County Deputy Josh Wiley is in critical condition with injuries from the stabbing and gunfire.

MNPD Spokesperson Kris Mumford said Rodney Cole had a medical condition and visited the Vanderbilt clinic frequently for check-ups.

Police said Cole asked to use the restroom during the clinic visit and was escorted inside the bathroom by Deputy Wiley.

Shortly after, Wiley’s partner Deputy Tomishae Jones heard him yelling her name. She went in the bathroom to find Cole on top of Wiley, stabbing him with a long screw driver.

At some point in the confrontation, Mumford said both deputies fired shots at the inmate. Cole stabbed Wiley several times, but the gunshots caused the most injury to him.

Police are investigating whether or not Cole took one of the deputy’s guns, if gunfire was exchanged, and how the prisoner got the screw driver.

They’re also looking in to how Cole was restrained during the trip to the bathroom. Mumford said the prisoner arrived at the clinic in handcuffs and shackles.
