Chelsea Manning Makes 2nd Prison Suicide Attempt

Manning’s attorneys declined to state details of the suicide attempt last month at a Fort Leavenworth prison.  The attorneys said prison conditions contribute to their client’s delicate mental state.  They maintain that her solitary confinement is punishment for her July suicide attempt.

Manning was arrested in 2010 and convicted in 2013 for leaking over 700,000 secret military and State Department documents to WikiLeaks.  Manning was in Iraq at the time, assigned duties as an intelligence analyst.

In 2014, the U.S. Department of Defense was sued by the ACLU over its refusal to treat Manning’s gender dysphoria.

Manning went on a hunger strike in September until the Army relented in getting her treatment, including surgery, for gender dysphoria.
