Khalid Mohammad, 28, was originally charged with second-degree murder for gunning down University of Ottawa student Sharif Said, 21, in May 2015, but in a negotiated deal, pleaded guilty to the reduced charge of manslaughter.
His lawyer said that if the murder case had gone to trial, the Crown would have had a difficult time proving its case. as one witness has left the country and another is dead.
Mohammad shot Said several times near the train station in Ottawa’s east end, and then took off in a getaway car driven by Abdulaziz Abdullah, 30.
The trouble started after a night of partying on May 2, 2015. At the party, Said and his friends started arguing with Mohammad about whose neighborhood was better, and exchanged insults.
Said and a friend left the party but Said demanded to be driven back to the party. He went inside and renewed the argument, then Mohammad pulled out a handgun. Mohammad hit him in the head with the gun and someone hit Said’s head with a bottle. Said was pulled to safety by a friend and they left by a back door. They saw Mohammad and his friends drive off.
It didn’t end there. Said and his friend followed Mohammad’s vehicle and pulled in front of them, forcing them to pull over by the entrance to a train station. Said began to walk toward them and one of Mohammad’s friends thought he had a gun but he didn’t. Then Mohammad opened fire on Said and Said kept walking toward their vehicle. Said, although shot several times, made it close to the SUV and touched it. Police later found a bloody hand print on the passenger side.
Mohammad pleaded guilty to manslaughter and was sentenced to prison for 10 years. He’s been in jail since May 2015, and was credited for custody time. He has seven years and 10 months left to serve.
Mohammad’s getaway driver, Abdulaziz Abdullah, pleaded guilty to accessory. After credit for custody time, he will serve 30 days in jail.
