Lawyers for Michelle Carter, 20, who is accused of manslaughter, will argue that the jury at her manslaughter trial should not be allowed to hear about statements she made to police. She is charged in the 2014 death of Conrad Roy III, 18 and is reported to have sent Roy text messages encouraging him to commit suicide.
A judge has scheduled a hearing for Friday on the request.
Roy, dead from carbon monoxide poisoning, was found in his pickup truck in Fairhaven in July 2014.
Carter’s lawyer has argued that the texts are protected free speech and that she is not responsible for the suicide. The Supreme Court of Massachusetts ruled that a grand jury had cause to indict Carter based on evidence suggesting she engaged in a “systematic campaign of coercion.”
