Congratulations are in order to Steven Avery, the Wisconsin prisoner whose (possibly wrongful) conviction for murder was documented in the Netflix docuseries, Making A Murderer. No, his attorney Kathleen Zellner hasn’t exonerated him for the murder of Teresa Halbach – at least not yet – but Avery is celebrating his recent engagement to Lynn Hartman, a legal secretary from Nevada.
Kathleen Zellner revealed new parts of her theory on how her client was set up – and hints to who she thinks really murdered Teresa Halbach.
The pair says they’ve been “dating” for eight months, but until they met in person last week, their relationship was conducted entirely through letters and phone calls.
“She’s going to be my future wife, we’ll be laughing forever,” Avery, 54, told the Daily Mail about Hartman, 53, accepting his proposal. “I’m happy. She treats me decent, she loves me, she’s kind of spoiling me right now.”
“I am very happy to announce that Steven Avery asked me to marry him today, and I accepted,” Hartman wrote on Facebook. “It has been a difficult road getting to this point in our lives but we are very happy.”
The couple apparently has a lot of confidence in Zellner’s promise to exonerate Avery, and won’t be having a jailhouse wedding, choosing instead to wait until “shortly after he is released.”
This won’t be Avery’s first marriage either; he was previously wed to Lori Mathiesen, and was engaged to two other women, Jodi Stachowski and Sandy Greenman, both of whom were seen on the Netflix series. Last month, Greenman, who made weekly trips to the Waupun Correctional Institute for the last 11 years to visit Avery, told the Daily Mail that her ex has become the “strangest sex symbol,” and that he receives as many as 40 letters a day from women. She’s not convinced that Hartman’s feelings for Avery are what they seem.
“She’s very pretty, there’s no way she’d want Steven Avery usually,” Greenman told theDaily Mail. “All the family are afraid of her, something isn’t right, I know she wants fame, and she’s looking for money.”
Avery’s family, meanwhile, is just glad to see him smiling. Steven’s cousin, Carla Chase, posted photos of the happy couple to a Facebook family support group, writing, “Please no negative comments. We are here to support Steven & if he is happy, we all should be happy. Thank you everyone for all of your support.”
