Michael Banks

Michael Banks is charged with First-degree murder with a firearm; Attempted first-degree murder (multiple counts); Attempted first-degree murder of a law enforcement officer; and Illegal possession of a firearm as a convicted felon. The charges stem from a shooting on 17 January 2024, at a family residence north of downtown Tampa. Banks allegedly became enraged after overhearing his mother and her friend discussing plans to evict him from the home. This discussion occurred after they discovered Banks had written a letter to his 17-year-old daughter, insisting she enter a romantic relationship with him and refrain from dating anyone else. Banks allegedly retrieved a revolver and shot his 60-year-old mother (grazing her head) and shot her 52-year-old friend, Josephine Muentes, who died at the scene. He then targeted his daughter, shooting through a bathroom door and striking her in the leg as she tried to flee. When Tampa Police Department officers arrived, Banks allegedly opened fire on them. Officers returned fire, and though no one was struck during the exchange, Banks surrendered shortly afterward.
