Keyante Newbern is charged for the homicide of 23-year-old Mya Kelly. Kelly had texted her boyfriend to come home because she was scared. Two hours later, she was killed by gunfire. Newbern is charged with open murder stemming from the Dec. 26, 2022, shooting. Just before 10pm on the day after Christmas the couple heard a knock at the door but saw nobody through the door peephole. But then a bullet came through the door striking Kelly and killing her. Police used surveillance camera footage to determine that a silver Dodge Journey was involved in the shooting. The driver of the Dodge, Marguis Welch who is one of the prosecutor’s witnesses. Welch told detectives that when Newbern returned to his vehicle, he said, 'I shot that b---- up.'.
