Ali Younes is a former University of Iowa student charged with first-degree robbery, attempted murder and first-degree theft in Iowa City. Police say he tackled a woman to the ground in April 2022, allegedly strangled her until she was unconscious and took her $20,000 earrings. Younes also allegedly admitted to police that he stole the earrings because he believed the woman was dead. While on house arrest and awaiting trial in May 2023, Younes allegedly cut off his ankle monitor and was taken by his parents to Chicago's O'Hare International Airport, where he allegedly boarded a flight to his home country of Jordan. Younes surrendered to authorities 16 months later at the U.S. Embassy in Jordan and was returned to the United States. His parents Alfred Younes and Lima Younes both pleaded guilty to aiding and abetting their son escaping from custody. |
