R C Curtis is accused in the 2015 killing of 75-year-old H-E-B employee Paula Boyd who was known as 'The Deli Lady'. Curtis is charged with capital murder. It is alleged that Curtis, who was married to Paula Boyd’s granddaughter at the time, beat, strangled and sexually assaulted Boyd in her San Antonio apartment. An autopsy showed that she had suffered from blunt force trauma. Boyd was discovered on October 21, 2015, after failing to show up for work. Surveillance footage captured Curtis attempting to use Boyd's debit card at a gas station the day after her death. While initially arrested for credit card abuse, the charges against Curtis were upgraded to capital murder in March 2016 after his DNA matched evidence from the Paula Boyd murder crime scene. If convicted, Curtis faces an automatic life sentence without parole, as prosecutors are not seeking the death penalty. A November 2021 trial ended in mistrial after prosecutors revealed new evidence late in the process. Further delays have been caused by the late production of evidence. |
