Cristhian Bahena Rivera was found guilty of first-degree murder in the death of the University of Iowa student 20-year-old Mollie Tibbetts. However, the judge presiding over the first-degree murder case involving the Mexican immigrant has delayed sentencing in order to hear arguments about newly discovered evidence about who may have killed Molly Tibbetts in 2018.
A motion claims there was a jailhouse witness who came forward to detail a claim of another inmate who may have killed the Brooklyn native and University of Iowa student. Tibbetts’ body was found covered in cornstalks in a field outside the town of Guernsey. An autopsy found she died of ‘multiple sharp force injuries.’ Authorities say Rivera led them to Tibbetts’ body after being interviewed. Investigators say Rivera told them he pursued Tibbetts in his car while she was jogging in her hometown of Brooklyn, before getting out of the car and confronting her. Tibbetts threatened to call the police, at which point Rivera claims he blacked out and remembers nothing until later. Rivera faces life in prison without the possibility of parole.
