Man Claimed to be Decorated Marine – Sent to Prison in Stolen Valor Case

READING, Pa. Judge Paul Yatron sentenced Shane Sperow to 21 months to five years in prison followed by three years of probation.  His charges included unsworn falsification to authorities and probation violations for prior convictions including possession of prohibited offensive weapons and theft by deception.

Sperow was charged last April after telling a judge on his previous case that he was a retired and decorated member of the U.S. Marine Corps.  He also claimed he was awarded a Bronze Star and two Purple Hearts during his service time.

Sperow was handed a reduced sentence for the previous charges.  Judge Thomas Parisi cited Sperow’s military experience and the fact he was injured during combat as reasons for the reduction.

Seized from Sperow’s home was a uniform with his name on it and a fraudulent certificate of honorable discharge.
