Chad Palmer of Orrville faces two counts of attempted murder and two counts of felonious assault. He is accused of stabbing Wayne County Sheriff Thomas Ballinger and Sgt. Dan Broome on May 12, 2026. The stabbings happened around 11am when Sheriff Ballinger and Sergeant Broome responded to a suspicious person call. Sheriff Ballinger was stabbed in the forearm and Sergeant Broome received a stab wound to the waist. The search for Palmer lasted until 12:57pm, when he was found in a structure against the woods in the same area. While in the shed, Palmer found gasoline and doused himself with it, and went live on Facebook. Palmer eventually exited the structure and was taken into custody.
