Chief Albert Luthuli Inquest Hearing
A 1967 inquest ruled that Chief Albert Luthuli was walking on a railway line when he was struck by a train and died after fracturing his skull. This is a a fresh inquest into Chief Albert Luthuli's death. Activists and his family have long cast doubt on the official version of events. The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has said that it will be presenting evidence before the court in an attempt to have the initial findings into the deaths of Chief Luthuli overturned. Luthuli at the time of his death was the leader of the then-banned African National Congress (ANC). He won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1960 for spearheading the fight against apartheid. He was South Africa's first winner of the Nobel Peace Prize. The initial inquiry into the Nobel laureate's death 'found that there was no evidence which disclosed any criminal culpability on the part of any of the employees of the South African Railways or anyone else'. However, campaigners have long suspected the authorities had killed him and covered it up.

Karen Read, a financial analyst and college professor, is facing charges of second-degree murder, manslaughter while operating under the influence and leaving the scene in the death of her boyfriend, Boston Police Officer John O'Keefe. O'Keefe's bruised, frozen body was found on the lawn of Boston Police Officer Brian Albert on the morning of January 29, 2022. Prosecutors say Read and O'Keefe, 46, argued drunkenly in her car as she was dropping him off at a friend's house party after a night of barhopping. They allege she intentionally backed her Lexus SUV into O'Keefe in a rage, leaving him to die in the snow. Read claims that she and O'Keefe had been drinking with his friend Jennifer McCabe, whom Read did not know well, at the local bar. Around midnight, McCabe invited the couple to the home of her brother-in-law Brian Albert, a retired Boston Police Fugitive Unit commander detective. Read says she dropped O'Keefe off there then drove to his home in Canton, where the officer lived with his orphaned niece and nephew, and went to bed. Later she returned to the Albert home and saw O'Keefe's body on the lawn. Read denies killing O'Keefe and claims she's being framed by people who were in the suburban party house. There is an ongoing federal probe of a possible police cover-up in the case.

Lori Vallow Daybell was sentenced in Idaho in July 2023 to three consecutive terms of life in prison without parole for the murders of two of her children, Tylee Ryan, 16, and Joshua Vallow, 7, known as J.J., and for conspiring to murder her husband's former wife, Tammy Daybell. She had been inspired by what prosecutors called her 'doomsday' beliefs. She has now been extradited to Phoenix, Arizona to face charges related to the death of her fourth husband, Charles Vallow, as well as conspiring to kill her niece's ex-husband, Brandon Boudreaux. She was indicted in 2021 in Maricopa County after her brother, Alexander Cox, shot and killed the fourth of her five husbands, Charles Vallow, in July 2019. She had allegedly 'agreed with Alexander Cox that at least one of them or another' would engage in what would constitute the first-degree murder of Charles Vallow. In October 2019, Mr. Cox also shot at Brandon Boudreaux, her niece's former husband. Mr. Boudreaux survived. Mr. Cox died of natural causes in 2019, the Maricopa County medical examiner said. Lori Vallow Daybell was found guilty of conspiring to kill Charles Vallow. She now faces a charge of conspiracy to commit the murder of Brandon Boudreaux, her former nephew-in-law. Prosecutors allege Lori and her brother Alex Cox, planned to kill Brandon Boudreaux in 2019. It is alleged that Cox drove a Jeep that belonged to Lori's deceased husband Charles Vallow from Idaho to Arizona, then shot at Boudreaux outside his home on October 2, 2019.
