A loyal macaw charmed police officers as it posed with its owner for a court mugshot.
The four-year-old macaw, named Bird, posed with its owner Craig Buckner who appeared in an Oregon court suspected of a drug and theft offence.
Buckner had earlier left his pet in a tree outside court last Thursday as he waited for the case.
But when he fell asleep while waiting, he was taken for a drug urine test and failed and was arrested, sheriff’s spokesman Sgt Bob Ray said.
“He was very concerned about Bird the bird,” Ray said. “Very distraught.”
Bird was 30ft up the tree, Ray said, and it was getting dark and rainy with cold temperatures.
So deputies allowed Buckner to go outside and call his pet macaw to him and bring him inside.
Sgt Ray said: “[Bird] was very well trained and would not leave the tree for anyone other than Mr Buckner.”
The macaw stayed with deputies for several hours and feasted on peanuts until they contacted a friend who could pick Bird up.
While they waited, deputies let Buckner’s feathered friend sit on his shoulder in a set up booking shot, just for kicks.
But when they took a real mugshot of Buckner, Bird still managed to photo bomb it with a few of his colourful features, Ray said.
“We’re not all robots. We’re humans, we love animals and we want to do the right thing,” he said.
“For the animal, and for Mr. Buckner too.”
