Carlos Acosta and Andrew Polovin

Carlos Acosta and Andrew Polovin were former DCFS workers who are on trial for child endangerment in the case of AJ Freund, who was murdered by his parents. Acosta and Polovin are charged with two felony counts of endangering the life of a child and reckless conduct. A.J. Freund suffered abuse and torture and was killed in 2019 at the hands of his parents at their home in Crystal Lake. Police found the boy's body buried in a shallow grave in a field near Woodstock. Prosecutors said the two men knowingly caused A.J.'s death by allowing him to be placed in circumstances that endangered his life. A.J.'s father, Andrew Freund was sentenced to 30 years in prison and his mother, JoAnn Cunningham, was sentenced to 35 years in prison.
