Maria Barnes Rodriguez is charged with first degree premeditated murder with a firearm after fatally shooting her 5-month-old son on March 25, 2020. On the morning of the murder, Barnes sent a lengthy text message to her husband and an email to her father which appeared to be suicide notes that mentioned her son Jaxxon. Barnes was discovered in a vehicle by Cox Communications workers with a a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Jaxxon was found deceased from a single gunshot wound when first responders arrived. The charge carries a maximum penalty of either the death penalty or life in prison without parole.
