Jesse Alvarez was convicted of first-degree murder with a special-circumstances allegation of lying in wait for the killing of 37-year-old Mario Fierro on February 1, 2021,. The Cathedral Catholic High School teacher was shot multiple times outside his North Park home as he was preparing to go to work. Alvarez killed Fierro after discovering Fierro got engaged to Amy Gembara, another CCHS teacher who Alvarez had dated for several years.
