Darrin Ruben Lopez is charged with murder in the October 2020 death of American Airlines technology director James Faith and transportation of a firearm with intent to commit a felony offense. On October 9, 2020, seconds after James and his wife Jennifer stepped out the front door to walk their dog in their Dallas neighborhood, a gunman shot James seven times, three bullets to the face, three to the chest and one to the groin. Detectives traced a black Nissan Titan spotted leaving the scene to Darrin Lopez’s Tennessee home and while there investigators arrested Lopez and found the gun used to kill James Faith inside Lopez's home. Lopez and Jennifer had been dating for seven months when they created a plan to kill Jennifer's husband James Faith. Jennifer had deceived Lopez into believing that James was physically and sexually abusing her. Police revealed that Jennifer Faith and Darrin Lopez had been exchanging hundreds of text messages every day, in the months before and after the murder. The afternoon before the murder, the phones suddenly stopped communicating, and did not start communicating again until nine hours after James Faith was killed. Jennifer pleaded guilty in February 2022 to a federal murder-for-hire charge and was ultimately sentenced to life in prison. At her sentencing, Jennifer admitted to manipulating Lopez, who 'suffered a traumatic brain injury while serving in the U.S. Army in Iraq, leaving him disabled'.
