Mark Clanton moved into his home in 2002 in North Bear County, Texas. Darin Johnson his next door neighbor moved into his home in 2019. Clanton and Johnson did not get along. On September 19, 2021 Johnson is seen on her side of the fence cutting down branches from a tree in Clanton's yard because when they blossomed, the flowers fell into her pool. Johnson then, noticing Clanton recording her, swung a saw at Clanton's phone two times. According to Clanton, the first swing struck his phone and the second swing 'raked across the back of [his] hand'. The saw cut open his hand, causing him to bleed. Johnson was convicted by a jury of assault causing bodily injury and sentenced to one year in county jail, suspended for two years of community supervision. Following an incident over the positioning of a trash can,Darin Johnson is now charged with Count 1: That on October 21, 2023 Darin Johnson struck Mark Clanton with a motor vehicle that in it's use was capable of causing death and serious bodily injury and did cause bodily injury to Mark Wayne Clanton; and Count 2: Darin Johnson did knowingly cause bodily injury to Mark Wayne Clanton, who at the time was 65 years or older against the peace and dignity of the state.
