Officers Camden Burch and Beau Schoenegge are charged with reckless homicide in the death of Frank Tyson on April 18, 2024. Tyson died while in police custody after fleeing a traffic crash in Canton Ohio. After being taken to the ground and handcuffed lying on his stomach, one officer then appeared to put a knee on Tyson's upper body for roughly 30 seconds. Tyson told officers he couldn't breathe. An officer tells him to cooperate and calm down. Tyson again said 'I can't breathe. I can't breathe', before adding, 'You're on my neck'. According to his family, on the police body camera you can hear Tyson tell officers at least seven times in one minute he can't breathe. According to the video, after the officer lifted his knee, Tyson was left without aid and appeared motionless for about five minutes, An officer asked if Tyson has calmed down and whether he's breathing, at which point his pulse was checked and officers performed chest compressions. Tyson was taken to a local hospital where he died, still in handcuffs. The preliminary autopsy report listed causes of death as cardiopulmonary arrest in association with physical altercation and prone restraint, as well as acute intoxication by cocaine and ethanol. The Stark County Coroner's Office ruled Tyson's death a homicide. |
