Bonginkosi Khanyile

Bonginkosi Khanyile an MK Party member and former student activist, was arrested in 2021. Former president Jacob Zuma on had been sentenced to 15 months’ imprisonment on June 29, 2021, after the Constitutional Court found him guilty of contempt of court for failing to comply with its earlier order involving the State Capture Commission. Khanyile faces charges of incitement to commit public violence and contraventions of the Disaster Management Act relating to the unrest that followed Zuma's sentencing. According to the state, between July 8 and 10, 2021, Khanyile incited violence through a video in which he allegedly said in isiZulu: 'We are saying those who are proceeding with burning the country must continue to burn it until Msholozi is released'. He also said 'Those who are proceeding to fight must continue to do so until Msholozi is released'. The resulting chaos, between July 8 and 19, 2021, led to the deaths of approximately 353 people, financial losses estimated at R50 billion, and put around 150 000 jobs at risk.
