Bafana Mahungela is accused of raping and murdering 34-year-old Johannesburg teacher Kirsten Kluyts on 29 October, 2023. Mahungela claims that the only crime he is guilty of, is stealing Kluyts clothing and not of her murder. Her body was discovered in a ditch in Sandon. Mahungela is alleged to have committed the murder of the 14 weeks pregnant Delta Park High School teacher during a road running event, MyRun in Sandton. Mahungela has said that he initially approached her when he saw her body lying in a secluded area. He said he intended to help her but when he realised she was dead, he took her clothes off because he had touched her and didn't want his fingerprints or DNA to link him to the crime. Mahungela has also denied following Kluyts before she was found dead despite the CCTV footage showing him a few metres away before her death.
