Alexander Kozak

Alexander Kozak, 22, a former Coral Ridge Mall security guard was found guilty with the shooting death of 20-year-old Andrea Farrington, a fellow mall employee, at the mall in Coralville on June 12, 2015. According to reports, Kozak shot Farrington three times in the back while she was working at an Iowa Children's Museum kiosk in the mall, after he received a text message from her breaking off their relationship. Kozak fled the mall after the shooting but was later apprehended by police on Interstate 80. Kozak has entered a diminished responsibility defense, saying that he had a mental defect at the time of the incident. If convicted, Kozak faces life in prison without parole. Kozak's attorney has filed a motion for a new trial because he believes Kozak did not have a fair trial. He points to an audio recording played in court as one of the many reasons for foul play. The motion will be considered in court on June 6th. If the motion fails, Kozak will be sentenced as planned.
