Shelby County jail deputies Stevon Jones and Cortney Parham are charged in the 2022 death of 33-year-old inmate Gershun Freeman. Gershun Freeman died inside Shelby County Jail on October 5, 2022. An autopsy report says Freeman suffered cardiac arrest while he was restrained and that his manner of death was classified as homicide. Stevon Jones and Cortney Parham are charged with second-degree murder and aggravated assault in concert resulting in death. Seven others have been indicted for the death of Freeman who was having a psychotic episode when jailers punched, kicked and knelt on his back during a confrontation. A video shows Freeman being wrestled to the ground by officers who then begin to punch, kick and pepper-spray him after he ran naked from his cell. Another camera shows officers stepping and kneeling on his back before he becomes still. One officer remained on Freeman’s back for several minutes before he was lifted. Freeman had been booked in jail on October 1, 2022 on charges of attacking and kidnapping his girlfriend. |
