Rick Chow, a Columbia convenience store owner, is accused of fatally shooting a 14-year-old boy in 2023. Chow is charged with murder in the death of Cyrus Carmack-Belton, who was shot and killed on May 28, 2023, outside Chow's Shell gas station in Columbia. Chow has been denied immunity under South Carolina's Stand Your Ground law. The judge said South Carolina's Stand Your Ground law requires evidence of self-defense in a life-threatening situation, which the court determined was not shown in this case. The prosecution say Rick Chow and his son chased 14-year-old Cyrus Carmack-Belton from the store after accusing him of stealing four bottles of water. Investigators say surveillance video did not support the theft allegation. According to authorities, Chow shot Carmack-Belton once in the back during the chase after his son claimed the teen had a gun. They say there was no evidence of a physical confrontation or that Cyrus Carmack-Belton had pointed a gun at Rick Chow. |
