State corrections officer Michael Fisher was charged with second-degree manslaughter. He was accused in the death of inmate 43-year-old Robert L. Brooks, 43, at the Marcy Correctional Facility in Central New York. Multiple corrections officers repeatedly punched and kicked Robert Brooks in the groin, abdomen and face on December 9, 2024 in the infirmary at the Marcy prison in Oneida County. He died hours later the following morning on December 10 at Wynn Hospital in Utica, New York. The savage beating, which prosecutors said was the final of three beatings to Brooks, was recorded on video by body cameras worn by four of the prison guards. None had turned on their camera, but 30 minutes of video was passively recorded without audio. It is alleged that Fisher was intimately aware of the fact that Mr. Brooks was being beaten but he stood there and did absolutely nothing. During jury deliberations Fisher accepted a plea deal pleading guilty to reckless endangerment in the second degree. By accepting the plea deal, Fisher will receive a sentence of 6 months. |
