Jose Antonio Soto-Escalera is accused of killing Tania Esther Wise, 23, and her unborn child. Wise and her unborn son were found face-down in a ditch in northwest St. Lucie County on August 24, 2018. An autopsy determined Wise had a blunt force trauma wound to the back of the head and fractures to the skull. There was also trauma to her private area. Her throat had been cut and her unborn child, Josiah Wise, also died as a result of the attack. Wise, who was over 8-months pregnant, was due to have a cesarean section the week after she was found dead. A witness who knew Wise said Wise had indicated she was pregnant 'and there were a couple of guys it was between'. At first Wise didn't want the baby because she thought it was Escalera's baby. The witness also said that Escalera gave Wise $500 for an abortion. The witness reported seeing text messages between Wise and a former boyfriend indicating Wise gave the money to the former boyfriend instead of terminating the pregnancy. Escalera was married, and his wife was unaware of Wise and the unborn child. Escalera gave investigators a DNA sample that showed he was the father of the unborn child. Investigators also found that Escalera's cellphone records showed incriminating Google searches hours before Wise's body was found. Escalera faces two counts of first-degree murder and two counts of second-degree murder. He was found guilty and sentenced to death. |
