{"id":9853,"date":"2017-11-21T20:11:31","date_gmt":"2017-11-22T01:11:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/?p=9853"},"modified":"2017-11-21T20:11:31","modified_gmt":"2017-11-22T01:11:31","slug":"graduate-21-sues-oxford-1m","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/2017\/11\/21\/graduate-21-sues-oxford-1m\/","title":{"rendered":"Graduate with 2:1 sues Oxford for \u00a31m"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"story-body__introduction\">An Oxford graduate&#8217;s failure to get a top degree cost him a lucrative legal career, the High Court has heard.<\/p>\n<p>Faiz Siddiqui alleges &#8220;inadequate&#8221; teaching on his modern history course resulted in him getting a low upper second degree in June 2000.<\/p>\n<p>He blames staff being absent on sabbatical leave and is suing the university for \u00a31m.<\/p>\n<p>Oxford denies negligence and causation and says the case is &#8220;massively&#8221; outside the legal time limit.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Siddiqui also alleges medical information about him was not submitted to examiners by a tutor.<\/p>\n<p>The 39-year-old studied at Brasenose College and singled out the teaching on the Indian special subject part of his course for criticism.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media-landscape has-caption full-width\"><span class=\"image-and-copyright-container\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"responsive-image__img js-image-replace\" src=\"https:\/\/ichef-1.bbci.co.uk\/news\/624\/cpsprodpb\/0F27\/production\/_85997830_opxford2.jpg\" alt=\"Oxford University\" width=\"976\" height=\"549\" data-highest-encountered-width=\"624\" \/><\/span><figcaption class=\"media-caption\"><span class=\"media-caption__text\">Julian Milford, for Oxford University, told the court Mr Siddiqui described the teaching as &#8220;a little bit dull&#8221;<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>His counsel Roger Mallalieu told Mr Justice Foskett that Mr Siddiqui had been a &#8220;driven young man&#8221; aiming at a postgraduate qualification at an Ivy League university.<\/p>\n<p>He said: &#8220;Whilst a 2:1 degree from Oxford might rightly seem like a tremendous achievement to most, it fell significantly short of Mr Siddiqui&#8217;s expectations and was, to him, a huge disappointment.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Mr Mallalieu said his employment history in legal and tax roles was &#8220;frankly poor&#8221; and he was now unemployed, rather than having a career at the tax bar in England or a major US law firm.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Siddiqui also said his clinical depression and insomnia have been significantly exacerbated by his &#8220;inexplicable failure&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Julian Milford, for Oxford University, told the court Mr Siddiqui complained about insufficient resources, but had only described the teaching as &#8220;a little bit dull&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>He added the student received exactly the same amount of teaching as he would have in any other year.<\/p>\n<p>The seven-day hearing is concerned only with liability &#8211; with damages to be assessed later if Mr Siddiqui succeeds.<\/p>\n<p>Source: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-england-oxfordshire-42070712\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bbc.co.uk<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mh-excerpt\">An Oxford graduate&#8217;s failure to get a top degree cost him a lucrative legal career, the High Court has heard.
