{"id":9349,"date":"2017-10-03T06:12:18","date_gmt":"2017-10-03T10:12:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/?p=9349"},"modified":"2017-10-03T06:12:18","modified_gmt":"2017-10-03T10:12:18","slug":"somali-born-refugee-charged-canada-terror-attack","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/2017\/10\/03\/somali-born-refugee-charged-canada-terror-attack\/","title":{"rendered":"Somali-born refugee charged in Canada &#8216;terror&#8217; attack"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"story-body__introduction\">A Somali-born refugee has been charged with five counts of attempted murder in connection with a weekend attack in Edmonton, Alberta.<\/p>\n<p>Abdulahi Hasan Sharif, 30, also faces dangerous driving and weapons possession charges.<\/p>\n<p>Five people, including a uniformed police officer, were injured in the Saturday night incident.<\/p>\n<p>Authorities said the suspect could still face terror-related charges but none have yet been laid.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Sharif had been known to police for believing in extremist ideology.<\/p>\n<p>A flag belonging to so-called Islamic State was found inside the vehicle that hit the police officer.<\/p>\n<p>On Saturday evening, Constable Michael Chernyk was rammed by a car outside Alberta&#8217;s Commonwealth Stadium.<\/p>\n<p>The driver then stabbed the officer several times, before fleeing on foot.<\/p>\n<p>Shortly before midnight, a man driving a rented U-Haul van was pulled over at a checkpoint and police recognised the name on the rental documents as similar to those for the car that struck Constable Chernyk.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_9315\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9315\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/edmonton-terror.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-9315\" src=\"http:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/edmonton-terror.jpg\" alt=\"Edmonton Terror\" width=\"500\" height=\"383\" srcset=\"https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/edmonton-terror.jpg 500w, https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/edmonton-terror-300x230.jpg 300w, https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/edmonton-terror-80x60.jpg 80w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-9315\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">People attending a wedding near to where the car chase ended took pictures of the scene. Four pedestrians were struck during the chase in what police say appeared to be a deliberate action.<\/p>\n<p>Two injured pedestrians remain in hospital, one in serious condition.<\/p>\n<p>Constable Chernyk, is recovering from his wounds.<\/p>\n<p>Prime Minister Justin Trudeau called it a &#8220;terrorist attack&#8221; and said he was both &#8220;deeply concerned and outraged&#8221; by &#8220;this senseless act of violence&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>On Sunday evening, hundreds of people attended an anti-violence vigil in Edmonton organised by the Alberta Muslim Public Affairs Council.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Sharif is due to appear in an Edmonton court on 3 October.
