{"id":9096,"date":"2017-09-06T10:28:23","date_gmt":"2017-09-06T14:28:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/?p=9096"},"modified":"2017-09-06T10:28:23","modified_gmt":"2017-09-06T14:28:23","slug":"hillsborough-disaster-accused-appear-crown-court","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/2017\/09\/06\/hillsborough-disaster-accused-appear-crown-court\/","title":{"rendered":"Hillsborough disaster accused appear in crown court"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"story-body__introduction\">Five men charged over the Hillsborough disaster and its aftermath have appeared in crown court.<\/p>\n<p>The men, including ex-South Yorkshire Police (SYP) Ch Insp Sir Norman Bettison, sat in a glass-walled dock at Preston Crown Court in Lancashire.<\/p>\n<p>No formal pleas were given in the hearing but their legal teams have indicated they will deny the charges.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Justice Davis has ruled that any forthcoming trials should be held in Preston.<\/p>\n<p>About 20 family members of the 96 fans who were fatally injured in the 1989 disaster sat yards away in the public gallery, overlooking the court packed with 36 lawyers.<\/p>\n<p>Lawyers for the defendants had argued that future trials should be held outside of the North West of England to ensure the defendants received a fair hearing.<\/p>\n<p>They proposed holding the trials in Leeds, Birmingham or London.<\/p>\n<p>However, Richard Matthews QC, prosecuting, told the judge the prosecution team preferred the trial to go ahead in Preston and the judge agreed.<\/p>\n<p>Former Ch Supt David Duckenfield\u00a0<a class=\"story-body__link\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-england-merseyside-40419819\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">also faces 95 charges of manslaughter<\/a>\u00a0but was not required to attend.<\/p>\n<p>He can not be charged until an application to lift a stay on prosecution &#8211; imposed after he was prosecuted privately in 1999 &#8211; has been heard at the High Court.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_9097\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9097\" style=\"width: 615px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/David-Duckenfield.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-9097\" src=\"http:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/David-Duckenfield.jpg\" alt=\"David Duckenfield\" width=\"615\" height=\"410\" srcset=\"https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/David-Duckenfield.jpg 615w, https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/David-Duckenfield-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 615px) 100vw, 615px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-9097\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mr Duckenfield was match commander at the FA Cup semi-final when 96 Liverpool fans were fatally injured in a crush.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The full list of individuals and charges are:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"story-body__unordered-list\">\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\">Mr Duckenfield faces manslaughter by gross negligence of 95 men, women and children<\/li>\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\">Sir Norman faces four charges of misconduct in a public office relating to alleged lies he told in the aftermath about the culpability of fans<\/li>\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\">Graham Mackrell, former Sheffield Wednesday club secretary,\u00a0<a class=\"story-body__link\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-england-merseyside-40877811\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">has pleaded not guilty to two offences<\/a>\u00a0involving the stadium safety certificate and a health and safety offence<\/li>\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\">Peter Metcalf, who was a solicitor acting for SYP, is charged with perverting the course of Justice, relating to changes to witness statements<\/li>\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\">Former Ch Supt Donald Denton and former Det Ch Insp Alan Foster are accused of perverting the course of justice<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The CPS brought charges following referrals from the Operation Resolve investigation into the causes of the disaster and the Independent Police Complaints Commission probe.<\/p>\n<p>Source: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-england-merseyside-41172746\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bbc.co.uk<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mh-excerpt\">Five men charged over the Hillsborough disaster and its aftermath have appeared in crown court.
