{"id":8441,"date":"2017-07-09T01:29:05","date_gmt":"2017-07-09T05:29:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/?p=8441"},"modified":"2017-07-09T01:29:05","modified_gmt":"2017-07-09T05:29:05","slug":"first-nations-activist-taking-ontario-environment-minister-court-air-pollution-regulations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/2017\/07\/09\/first-nations-activist-taking-ontario-environment-minister-court-air-pollution-regulations\/","title":{"rendered":"First Nations activist taking Ontario environment minister to court over air pollution regulations"},"content":{"rendered":"<div data-reactid=\"166\">\n<p>A First Nations activist is taking Ontario\u2019s environment minister to court for failing to follow through on a years-old promise to review the way the province regulates industrial air pollution.<\/p>\n<p>Ada Lockridge is a member of the Aamjiwnaang First Nation, a community nestled amid a cluster of refineries, petrochemical plants and other industrial facilities known as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.com\/news\/canada\/2008\/03\/16\/imperial_oil_crews_try_to_stem_toxins_in_sarnia.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Chemical Valley<\/a>, near Sarnia.<\/p>\n<p>In May 2009, Lockridge and a partner secured a pledge from the environment ministry that it would review how it regulates cumulative air pollution, such as in areas with a heavy presence of industrial plants.<\/p>\n<p>After more than eight years of waiting, Lockridge has filed a court application asking a judge to order the province to immediately complete its review.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re not talking about an academic exercise. We\u2019re talking about people\u2019s air,\u201d said Kaitlyn Mitchell, Lockridge\u2019s lawyer from the environmental advocacy group Ecojustice.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-reactid=\"173\">\n<p>\u201cThere is a community of people in Aamjiwnaang . . . and every day they\u2019re asked to breathe air that has contaminants in it.
