Justice Robin Camp goes on trial Tuesday after asking an alleged rape victim why she did not keep her knees closed against her\u00a0attacker. This is one of several\u00a0comments he made which are cited in allegations that he is unfit to be on the bench. \u00a0Justice Camp\u2019s other comments included: \u201cSome sex and pain sometimes go together \u2026 that\u2019s not necessarily a bad thing;\u201d and \u201cshe knew she was drunk \u2026 is not an onus on her to be more careful.\u201d<\/p>\n
A\u00a0panel of three judges and two lawyers will decide\u00a0whether Camp’s\u00a0continued presence on the bench would undermine public confidence in the country\u2019s judges that he must be removed.<\/p>\n
The five-member panel could call for Justice Camp\u2019s dismissal. \u00a0The recommendation would then go to a\u00a0council\u00a0that\u00a0includes chief and associate chief justices across Canada. \u00a0If the council\u00a0affirms the recommendation, the federal Justice Minister would present it to Parliament, where the House of Commons and Senate would then be asked to vote on it. \u00a0In two cases of the 11 hearings in which the council had urged dismissal, the judges resigned first.<\/p>\n
The duration of the hearing at the Westin Hotel in Calgary is expected to be\u00a0five days, and\u00a0open to the public, but will not be streamed live\u00a0on the Internet.\u00a0\u00a0Cameras will also be barred; as they are in most Canadian courtrooms.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
