{"id":7573,"date":"2017-05-19T05:46:47","date_gmt":"2017-05-19T09:46:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/?p=7573"},"modified":"2017-05-19T05:46:47","modified_gmt":"2017-05-19T09:46:47","slug":"julian-assange-sweden-drops-rape-investigation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/2017\/05\/19\/julian-assange-sweden-drops-rape-investigation\/","title":{"rendered":"Julian Assange: Sweden drops rape investigation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"story-body__introduction\">Sweden&#8217;s director of public prosecutions has decided to drop the rape investigation into Wikileaks founder Julian Assange.<\/p>\n<p>Marianne Ny filed a request to the Stockholm District Court to revoke his arrest warrant, apparently ending a seven-year stand-off.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Assange, 45, has lived in the Ecuadoran embassy in London since 2012, trying to avoid extradition.<\/p>\n<p>He feared being extradited to the US if sent to Sweden.<\/p>\n<p>He could face trial in the US over the leaking hundreds of thousands of secret US military and diplomatic documents.<\/p>\n<p>A brief statement ahead of a press conference by the prosecutor later on Friday said: &#8220;Director of Public Prosecution, Ms Marianne Ny, has today decided to discontinue the investigation regarding suspected rape (lesser degree) by Julian Assange.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Mr Assange has always denied the rape allegations against him and was interviewed in the embassy in London six months ago in the presence of Swedish officials.<\/p>\n<p>But if he leaves the embassy he could be detained by UK police and face extradition to the US.<\/p>\n<p>After the news was announced on Friday, Wikileaks tweeted that the &#8220;focus now moves to the UK&#8221;, saying the UK had &#8220;refused to confirm or deny whether it has already received a US extradition warrant for Julian Assange&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Source\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-europe-39973864\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">bbc.co.uk<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mh-excerpt\">Sweden&#8217;s director of public prosecutions has decided to drop the rape investigation into Wikileaks founder Julian Assange.
