A man who has been jailed for dealing drugs has said that he fell into a life of crime\u00a0as a result of finding James Bulger\u2019s body 24 years ago.\u00a0 Terence Riley was 13 when he found the murdered toddler\u2019s remains on a train line in Merseyside in 1993. He was jailed for 12 years in 2009 after being extradited from Holland for drugs crimes but soon after his release he was in Liverpool Crown Court again. Judge Anil Murray accepted he may have suffered PTSD as a result of his discovery as he jailed him for 12 months.Riley\u2019s brother, James, also cites the discovery of Jamie\u2019s body to explain his life of crime.<\/p>\n

\u00a0In 2010, James Riley appeared at Liverpool Crown Court for stealing a bottle of brandy with a criminal record of 47 convictions and argued it was due to finding the dead child.Brendan Carville, defending, said: \u2018The horror of what he found on that occasion with his brother and two friends is something he has lived with ever since.\u00a0 Rather than taking advantage of counselling and the like he turned to alcohol and drugs.\u2019<\/p>\n

Jamie Bulger was abducted from The Strand shopping centre in Bootle by 10-year-olds Jon Venables and Robert Thompson on Friday February 12, 1993.\u00a0 Within three hours, the toddler was dead, but his body was only discovered on the railway line by the Riley brothers the following Sunday. Venables and Thompson were sent to secure children\u2019s homes and have since been given fresh identities.<\/p>\n

\u00a0Speaking in 2003, the Rileys\u2019 grandmother Ann Nesbitt explained how their traumatic discovery had torn their family apart.\u00a0 Ms Nesbitt said: \u2018Neither has spoken of it. They bottled it up. We tried to get the boys to talk about it, but they used to become hysterical, screaming they didn\u2019t want to think about it.<\/p>\n

\u2018After that day James went off the rails and Terence\u2019s personality changed totally. We hardly see him these days, but we know it was finding James\u2019s body that changed him.\u00a0 Every night I pray for little James, but I also pray for my grandsons.\u2019On Tuesday Liverpool Crown Court heard how Terence, recently of Vauxhall, Liverpool, led police on a high-speed chase across Merseyside last April 9.\u00a0 It ended with him losing control and crashing head-on into another car, injuring Darren Evans, Tina Barnes and their 11-year-old son. Prosecutor Derek Jones said they led police on a chase going at 50mph in a 20mph zone before the crash. Terence, who suffered a lump to his head, ran away but was caught by an officer and admitted: \u2018I was at a party. I\u2019m high!\u2019.\u00a0 A swab showed the presence of cocaine and, when he asked about the boy\u2019s condition, Terence described himself as a \u2018scumbag\u2019. He admitted dangerous driving, driving while disqualified, driving without insurance and failing to provide a blood sample. Louise Santamera, defending Terence, said he woke up at his girlfriend\u2019s feeling unwell, after going out to watch the Grand National. She said he \u2018recklessly\u2019 decided to drive home in her car and \u2018panicked\u2019 when he saw police because of his road ban. Ms Santamera said: \u2018Mr Riley is very sorry. He was particularly anxious about the young boy.\u2019 He denied saying he was \u2018high\u2019 and said he refused to give a blood sample because of a phobia of needles. Ms Santamera said: \u2018He has recently become a father, something that has filled him with joy, and as he put it, is \u2018motivation to get my life on the straight and narrow.\u2019<\/p>\n

A life of crime<\/h3>\n

In 2004 Terence was also convicted of dangerous driving and in 2009 was jailed for smuggling drugs from South America into England via Amsterdam.\u00a0 A year later Terence was handed a further 18 months in prison, after failing to pay back \u00a330,000 of his ill-gotten gains.\u00a0 He was working for Liverpool gangster David Hibbs-Turner, who was jailed for life with a minimum of 37 years for ordering the point-blank gun execution of dad-of-three Michael \u2018Mikey\u2019 Wright.\u00a0 Defending Terence in that 2009 drugs case, Ms Santamera said of the shocking James Bulger find: \u2018He has seen things which no young person should have to see.\u00a0 \u2018Of course, finding James Bulger\u2019s body on the railway line, without any counselling, was bound to have some effect on such a young person.\u2019\u00a0 Ms Santamera accepted Riley was already known to police before he and his brother found James Bulger\u2019s body.\u00a0 But she added: \u2018One wonders if he had undergone counselling and got the help he needed after that incident, whether he would find himself in the position he is today.\u2019<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
