{"id":7215,"date":"2017-05-03T11:03:38","date_gmt":"2017-05-03T15:03:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/?p=7215"},"modified":"2017-05-03T11:03:38","modified_gmt":"2017-05-03T15:03:38","slug":"denver-civil-rights-attorney-defend-man-accused-killing-prison-officer-death-penalty-case","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/2017\/05\/03\/denver-civil-rights-attorney-defend-man-accused-killing-prison-officer-death-penalty-case\/","title":{"rendered":"Denver civil rights attorney to defend man accused of killing prison officer in death penalty case"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By <a class=\" author-name\" title=\"Posts by Kirk Mitchell\" href=\"http:\/\/www.denverpost.com\/author\/kirk-mitchell\/\" rel=\"author\">Kirk Mitchell<\/a> | <a href=\"mailto:kmitchell@denverpost.com\">kmitchell@denverpost.com<\/a> | The Denver Post<\/p>\n<p>A Denver civil rights attorney who has handled several death penalty cases across the country has been appointed to defend a man who faces the death penalty for allegedly fatally slashing a Colorado corrections officer in 2012.<\/p>\n<p>David Lane will represent Miguel Alonso Contreras-Perez, who fired his public defenders.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.denverpost.com\/2016\/02\/17\/da-seeks-death-penalty-against-inmate-who-killed-prison-sergeant\/\">Contreras-Perez had been representing himself<\/a>\u00a0against charges that he killed Sgt. Mary Ricard on Sept. 24, 2012.\u00a0Perez allegedly also stabbed Sgt. Lori Gann the same day.<\/p>\n<p>Lane was appointed by 16th Judicial District Judge Michael Schiferl. On Tuesday, Lane requested a 60-day continuance of Contreras-Peres\u2019 arraignment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe death penalty is a human rights violation,\u201d Lane said. \u201cWhen I see the government trying to violate a person\u2019s human rights I will do everything I can to stop it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Contreras-Perez is an Army deserter who was sentenced in 2004 to 35 years to life in prison after he raped a 14-year-old girl he kidnapped in Colorado Springs.<\/p>\n<p>According to Contreras-Perez, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.denverpost.com\/2014\/02\/06\/colorado-inmate-to-stand-trial-in-slaying-of-prison-staffer\/\">attacks on the correctional officers<\/a> were spurred by a jealous rage. He was upset because he believed Gann was having a sexual relationship with another inmate and a staff member.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.denverpost.com\/2014\/03\/06\/montour-pleads-guilty-after-prosecutors-drop-death-penalty-demand\/\">Previously Lane represented Edward Montour<\/a> in his second murder trial. Montour had pleaded guilty to first-degree murder in the beating death of corrections officer Eric Autobee in 2003 and was sentenced to death by a judge.
