{"id":7181,"date":"2017-05-02T20:21:50","date_gmt":"2017-05-03T00:21:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/?p=7181"},"modified":"2017-05-02T20:21:50","modified_gmt":"2017-05-03T00:21:50","slug":"jordan-edwards-shooting-texas-police-change-account-death","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/2017\/05\/02\/jordan-edwards-shooting-texas-police-change-account-death\/","title":{"rendered":"Jordan Edwards shooting: Texas police change account of death"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"story-body__introduction\">A Texas police department has changed a key detail in the shooting of an unarmed black teenager, amid mounting calls for the officer to be arrested.<\/p>\n<p>Jordan Edwards, 15, died after an officer fired a rifle into a car that was driving away from a house party in the Dallas suburb of Balch Springs.<\/p>\n<p>Police initially said the car reversed &#8220;aggressively&#8221; towards the officer, but footage discredits that claim.<\/p>\n<p>Police Chief Jonathan Haber said he &#8220;misspoke&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The officer, who has not been identified, has been with the Balch Spring Police Department for six years.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"story-body__unordered-list\">\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\"><a class=\"story-body__link\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-us-canada-39787601\">US policeman admits guilt in driver death<\/a><\/li>\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\"><a class=\"story-body__link\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-us-canada-32740523\">Why do US police keep killing black men?<\/a><\/li>\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\"><a class=\"story-body__link\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-us-canada-35154937\">US police: &#8216;We are not punching bags&#8217;<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>He fired into a car full of teenagers as they left a party on Saturday night, Chief Haber said after reviewing the body-cam video.<\/p>\n<p>The car was actually driving forward &#8211; away from police &#8211; and not reversing toward them when the shots were fired, he explained.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I was unintentionally incorrect yesterday when I said that the victim&#8217;s vehicle was backing down the road,&#8221; Mr Haber said on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In fact, according to the video that I viewed, the vehicle was moving forward as the officers approached.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The officer&#8217;s behaviour &#8220;did not meet our core values&#8221;, the police chief said, adding that he has been placed on administrative leave.<\/p>\n<p>Jordan, who was in the front passenger seat, died after being shot in the back of the head.<\/p>\n<p>His 16-year-old brother and three friends were detained at the scene and taken to the Dallas County Sheriff&#8217;s Department, where they were interviewed as witnesses.<\/p>\n<p>Jordan&#8217;s cause of death has been ruled a homicide, however, that does not necessarily mean charges will be filed against the officer.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ichef-1.bbci.co.uk\/news\/624\/cpsprodpb\/1867\/production\/_95874260_de27-1.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"media-caption__text\"><em>Jordan&#8217;s mother, Charmaine, silently wept as her lawyers called for the officer&#8217;s arrest<\/em> <\/span><\/p>\n<p>The Dallas County Sheriff&#8217;s Department and the Dallas County District Attorney&#8217;s Office are conducting a criminal investigation.<\/p>\n<p>The incident occurred on Saturday night when police responded to reports of underage drinking at a house party where around 100 kids had gathered, neighbours said.<\/p>\n<p>Officers were inside the home trying to find the owner when they heard outside what they believed to be gunshots, causing panic at the home as people fled.<\/p>\n<p>After going outside, the police officer fired several shots which killed Jordan, a first-year American football player at Mesquite High School.<\/p>\n<p>His coach, Jeff Fleener, <a class=\"story-body__link-external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/news\/dallas\/2017\/04\/30\/officer-fatally-shoots-15-year-old-balch-springs\">told the Dallas Morning News<\/a> that he was &#8220;crushed and heartbroken&#8221; to learn that Jordan had been killed.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You create a checklist of everything you would want in a player, a son, a teammate, a friend, and Jordan had all that.
