{"id":7018,"date":"2017-04-27T07:21:04","date_gmt":"2017-04-27T11:21:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/?p=7018"},"modified":"2017-04-27T07:21:04","modified_gmt":"2017-04-27T11:21:04","slug":"homicide-knife-crime-rates-england-wales","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/2017\/04\/27\/homicide-knife-crime-rates-england-wales\/","title":{"rendered":"Homicide and knife crime rates &#8216;up in England and Wales&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"story-body__introduction\">Cases of homicide and knife crime recorded by police in England and Wales are rising, <a class=\"story-body__link-external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ons.gov.uk\/peoplepopulationandcommunity\/crimeandjustice\/bulletins\/crimeinenglandandwales\/yearendingdec2016\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">figures suggest.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>A total of 4.8 million offences were recorded in 2016, up 9% on the previous year.<\/p>\n<p>The Office for National Statistics said this increase was &#8220;thought to reflect changes in recording processes and practices rather than crime&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Statisticians said homicide (up 21%) and knife crime (up 14%) appeared to show &#8220;smaller but genuine increases&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The ONS said there were also small increases in the number of burglaries and robberies, offences where recording practices were less likely to have been a factor in the rise.<\/p>\n<p>Key statistics for 2016 include:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"story-body__unordered-list\">\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\">697 homicides recorded, up 21% on 2015. These included the 96 cases of manslaughter that resulted from the Hillsborough disaster in 1989<\/li>\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\">32,448 knife crimes recorded &#8211; an increase of 14% on the previous year<\/li>\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\">39,355 rapes recorded, up 13%<\/li>\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\">5,864 firearms offences, up by 13% largely due to a rise in crimes involving handguns<\/li>\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\">55,824 robberies, a rise of 10%<\/li>\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\">92,868 car thefts &#8211; 16% more than in 2015<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The ONS said there had been a &#8220;near-continual decline&#8221; in police recorded crime between 2004 and 2014, but since the year ending March 2014, total police recorded crime has increased.<\/p>\n<p>The separate Crime Survey of England and Wales, which estimates offences including those that are not reported to police, suggests that 2016 crime levels were broadly stable with 2015.<\/p>\n<p>It found about two in every 100 adults had been victims of violent crime last year, compared with a peak in 1995 of five in every 100 adults.<\/p>\n<p>Overall, there were about 11.5 million incidents recorded in the Crime Survey after fraud and computer misuse offences were included for the first time.<\/p>\n<p>They made up 5.4 million of the total, meaning year-on-year comparisons are meaningless.<\/p>\n<p>Stripping out the two categories gives a tally of 6.1 million, which the ONS said was not a &#8220;statistically significant&#8221; change from the previous year, and was still 40% below peak crime levels of 19 million in 1995.<\/p>\n<p>These are the final sets of crime statistics to be released before the general election.<\/p>\n<p>Source: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-39729601\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">bbc.co.uk<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mh-excerpt\">Cases of homicide and knife crime recorded by police in England and Wales are rising, figures suggest.
