{"id":6910,"date":"2017-04-21T10:11:34","date_gmt":"2017-04-21T14:11:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/?p=6910"},"modified":"2017-04-21T10:11:34","modified_gmt":"2017-04-21T14:11:34","slug":"thai-court-sentences-spanish-man-death-grisly-murder","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/2017\/04\/21\/thai-court-sentences-spanish-man-death-grisly-murder\/","title":{"rendered":"Thai court sentences Spanish man to death for grisly murder"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"article-description\">A Thai court sentenced a Spanish man to death on Friday for the grisly murder of a fellow Spaniard whose dismembered body parts were discovered in Bangkok&#8217;s main river last year.<\/div>\n<div id=\"article-body\">\n<p>Artur Segarra, 38, was convicted of kidnapping and killing 40-year-old\u00a0David Bernat in an effort to steal tens of millions of baht from the\u00a0businessman, according to a verdict read out at Thailand&#8217;s Criminal Court.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Forensic evidence such as blood stains and fingerprints on (Segarra&#8217;s)\u00a0electric grinder had DNA that matched the victim,&#8221; the judge said, adding that\u00a0CCTV footage and testimony from Segarra&#8217;s maid and girlfriend also implicated\u00a0him in the killing.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Therefore the judge sentences the defendant to death on the grounds that\u00a0he committed premeditated murder in order to steal the victim&#8217;s money.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>While death sentences are still on the statute books in Thailand it is rare\u00a0for prisoners to be executed. The last execution was in 2009.<\/p>\n<p>Segarra&#8217;s lawyer, Jessada Piyasuwanvanich, told reporters his client would\u00a0likely file an appeal and &#8220;fight the case to the end&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Segarra, who had denied all the charges, appeared calm while the verdict\u00a0was read and translated to him in Spanish.<\/p>\n<p>When he arrived at court he held his hand up to show the words &#8220;Luke\u00a023:34&#8221;\u00a0written in ink on his palm. The Bible citation is a reference to Jesus&#8217;s final\u00a0words on the cross.<\/p>\n<p>The macabre murder came to light last January after Thai police began\u00a0hauling body parts out of the city&#8217;s Chao Praya River. It took them several\u00a0days to identify the victim.<\/p>\n<p>Segarra<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelocal.es\/20160208\/spaniard-held-over-grisly-bangkok-river-murder\"> was arrested in neighbouring Cambodia<\/a> several weeks later.<\/p>\n<p>It is not uncommon for foreigners to get swept up in Thailand&#8217;s criminal\u00a0underworld.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this month an Australian man was sentenced to death for the murder\u00a0of a former Hells Angels member found beaten and naked in a shallow grave in\u00a0Pattaya, a popular Thai beach town known for its raunchy nightlife and links\u00a0to organised crime.<\/p>\n<p>In September, Thai police arrested three Americans in Bangkok after\u00a0discovering the frozen body parts of another foreigner inside their freezer.<\/p>\n<p>The men were charged with multiple offences and are being held in prison\u00a0while they await trial.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Source\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelocal.es\/20170421\/thai-court-sentences-spanish-man-to-death-for-grisly-murder\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">thelocal.es<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mh-excerpt\">A Thai court sentenced a Spanish man to death on Friday for the grisly murder of a fellow Spaniard whose dismembered body parts were discovered in Bangkok&#8217;s main river last year.
