{"id":6869,"date":"2017-04-20T07:21:39","date_gmt":"2017-04-20T11:21:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/?p=6869"},"modified":"2017-04-20T12:34:50","modified_gmt":"2017-04-20T16:34:50","slug":"coroner-consider-large-hoard-gold-coins-found-old-piano-can-classed-treasure","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/2017\/04\/20\/coroner-consider-large-hoard-gold-coins-found-old-piano-can-classed-treasure\/","title":{"rendered":"Coroner to consider if large hoard of gold coins found in OLD PIANO can be classed as treasure"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"author-information-container\"><span class=\"author-label\">By<\/span><span class=\"author\">Richard Vernalls<\/span><span class=\"author\">Jayne Thomson<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"author-information-container\"><\/div>\n<p>A coroner is to consider whether a large hoard of gold coins found hidden in an old piano can be classed as treasure.\u00a0 The stash of sovereigns, some dating to Queen Victoria\u2019s reign, were discovered when the instrument\u2019s new owners decided to have it re-tuned.\u00a0 The Shropshire coroner is convening a treasure inquest in Shrewsbury, on Thursday, which is expected to determine the coins\u2019 fate.<\/p>\n<p>Experts have already described the hoard, featuring coins dating from the late 19th century to 1915, as a \u201cstunning\u201d find.\u00a0\u00a0 In the early part of the last century, the piano was sold to a music shop in Saffron Walden, Essex, and then sold on to a local family.\u00a0 More recently through private sale the instrument, made in 1906, made its way to Shropshire where the discovery of coins was made by the latest owners in December 2016.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i1.birminghammail.co.uk\/incoming\/article12917548.ece\/ALTERNATES\/s615b\/JS117333483.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Peter Reavill, of the British Museum\u2019s Portable Antiquities Scheme, said: \u201cThe current owners did not know what to do but they came to the museum and they laid it all out on the table.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey laid this stuff out and I was like \u201cwhoa&#8221;.\u00a0 \u201cI\u2019m an archaeologist and I\u2019m used to dealing with treasure but I\u2019m more used to medieval brooches.\u00a0 \u201cI have never seen anything like that.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i1.birminghammail.co.uk\/incoming\/article12917581.ece\/ALTERNATES\/s615b\/JS117333240.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a stunning assemblage of material.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Since the discovery was made, a search has been under way to trace the relatives of whoever put the coins in the upright Broadwood &amp;amp;
