{"id":6687,"date":"2017-04-10T05:08:19","date_gmt":"2017-04-10T09:08:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/?p=6687"},"modified":"2017-04-10T05:08:19","modified_gmt":"2017-04-10T09:08:19","slug":"gozo-drugs-inquiry-not-seek-testimony-ministers-allegedly-involved-busuttil","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/2017\/04\/10\/gozo-drugs-inquiry-not-seek-testimony-ministers-allegedly-involved-busuttil\/","title":{"rendered":"Gozo drugs inquiry did not seek testimony of ministers allegedly involved \u2013 Busuttil"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>MALTA &#8211;<\/p>\n<p>A controversial inquiry into allegations of political interference into a Gozo drugs case did not even seek to interview two of the ministers allegedly involved, Opposition leader Simon Busuttil said today.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.timesofmalta.com\/articles\/view\/20170408\/local\/no-political-interference-in-gozo-drug-trafficking-case-inquiry.644721\" target=\"_blank\">inquiry<\/a> was ordered after a report in\u00a0<i>MaltaToday<\/i>\u00a0had alleged that a statement given to the Gozo police during a drug-related investigation in summer 2013 was changed following a meeting involving \u201ctwo senior politicians\u201d and family members of the suspects.<\/p>\n<p>Addressing a political event in Senglea, Dr Busuttil said the inquiry, which was carried out by a former Labour candidate, only spoke to Manuel Mallia and Anton Refalo after the report had been concluded and handed to the Prime Minister.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Busuttil said the inquiry had only sought the testimony of two people in what was a clear \u201ccover up and whitewash\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>No efforts were made to speak to the police who investigated the 2013 drug trafficking case, nor were the two ministers&#8217; chauffeurs spoken to, Dr Busuttil said.<\/p>\n<p>The Opposition leader said the alleged drug traffickers had been let off the hook thanks to ministerial intervention.<\/p>\n<p>Prime Minister Joseph Muscat did not care about drug victims, as he was more concerned about defending his own minister, Dr Busuttil said.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Busutill said a PN government would appoint a truly independent inquiry to examine the facts\u00a0of this case.<\/p>\n<p>He reminded that Dr Muscat was quick to appoint an inquiry board composed of three retired judges to investigate allegations involving PN deputy leader Beppe Fenech Adami.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Busuttil pledged to restore people&#8217;s faith in the police corps and the justice system.<\/p>\n<p>Key appointments to the country\u2019s institutions would be approved by a two-thirds majority in Parliament, Dr Busuttil said.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Busuttil said law and order in Malta were\u00a0being undermined by the government.<\/p>\n<p>Those who chose not to obey the law could do so in the comfort of knowing that ministers would intervene to protect them, Dr Busuttil said.<\/p>\n<p>He said it was no wonder that criminality was on the increase if those in power sought to obstruct justice.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Busuttil said the current government had to be booted out of Castille, as it was not capable of enforcing order.<\/p>\n<p>People no longer felt safe in the streets or even in their own homes, the Opposition leader said.<\/p>\n<p>He also noted that the recent spate of car bombings and cars mysteriously catching fire had not been solved by the police.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Source\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofmalta.com\/articles\/view\/20170409\/local\/gozo-drugs-inquiry-did-not-seek-testimony-of-ministers-allegedly.644852\" target=\"_blank\">www.timesofmalta.com<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mh-excerpt\">MALTA &#8211; A controversial inquiry into allegations of political interference into a Gozo drugs case did not even seek to interview two of the ministers allegedly involved, Opposition leader Simon Busuttil said today.
