{"id":6054,"date":"2017-03-07T05:58:21","date_gmt":"2017-03-07T10:58:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/?p=6054"},"modified":"2017-03-07T05:58:21","modified_gmt":"2017-03-07T10:58:21","slug":"robot-lawyer-overturned-160000-parking-tickets-now-helping-refugees","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/2017\/03\/07\/robot-lawyer-overturned-160000-parking-tickets-now-helping-refugees\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Robot lawyer&#8217; that overturned 160,000 parking tickets now helping refugees"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"m_first-letter m_first-letter--flagged\">A<\/span> chat bot that helped <a href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/technology\/2016\/06\/29\/19-year-olds-robot-lawyer-overturns-160000-parking-tickets\/\">overturn 160,000 parking tickets<\/a> is now giving free legal aid to asylum-seeking refugees through Facebook.<\/p>\n<p>DoNotPay, which has been dubbed the world\u2019s first robot lawyer, was created by London-born Stanford University student Joshua Browder.<\/p>\n<p>The 20-year-old, who has made Forbes\u2019 30 Under 30 list of the brightest young entrepreneurs, designed his first bot to help people fight parking fines.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"DoNotPay Robot Lawyer Demonstration\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/0yx6UIO6Xg0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"m_first-letter m_first-letter--flagged\">N<\/span>ow the \u2018Robin Hood of the internet\u2019 has just expanded the chat bot to Facebook Messenger to help refugees\u00a0in the US, Canada and the UK claim asylum.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUltimately, I just want to level the playing field so there\u2019s a bot for everything,\u201d he told <a href=\"http:\/\/uk.businessinsider.com\/facebook-chatbot-donotpay-help-refugees-claim-asylum-us-canada-uk-joshua-browder-parking-fines-2017-3\">Business Insider<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI originally started with parking tickets and delayed flights and all sorts of trivial consumer rights issues,\u201d he added. \u201cBut then I began to be approached by these non-profits and lawyers who said the idea of automating legal services is bigger than just a few parking fines. So I\u2019ve since tried to expand into doing something more humanitarian.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The bot asks users a series of questions in real time, such as \u201cHave you, your family or colleagues ever experienced harm or threats?\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"m_first-letter m_first-letter--flagged\">I<\/span>t helps refugees seeking asylum in the United States or Canada complete the necessary forms and those applying in the UK, who will then have to apply in person, with the support documents.<\/p>\n<p>Browder <a href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/technology\/2016\/06\/29\/19-year-olds-robot-lawyer-overturns-160000-parking-tickets\/\">watched hours of YouTube tutorial videos to create the chat bot<\/a>, explaining: \u201cIt was a huge challenge.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"articleBodyText section\">\n<div class=\"article-body-text component \">\n<div class=\"component-content\">\n<p><span class=\"m_first-letter m_first-letter--flagged\">H<\/span>e added: \u201cThe success of the parking tickets has made me realise this is bigger than parking charges.
