{"id":5885,"date":"2017-02-21T06:13:06","date_gmt":"2017-02-21T11:13:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/?p=5885"},"modified":"2017-02-21T06:13:06","modified_gmt":"2017-02-21T11:13:06","slug":"israeli-soldier-jailed-18-months-killing-palestinian-attacker","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/2017\/02\/21\/israeli-soldier-jailed-18-months-killing-palestinian-attacker\/","title":{"rendered":"Israeli soldier jailed for 18 months for killing Palestinian attacker"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"story-body__introduction\">An Israeli soldier who killed a wounded Palestinian attacker in a high-profile case that split opinion across the country has been jailed for 18 months.<\/p>\n<p>Sgt Elor Azaria was found guilty of manslaughter for shooting dead 21-year-old Abdul Fatah al-Sharif in Hebron, in the occupied West Bank, last March.<\/p>\n<p>Azaria had told a colleague that Sharif, who had stabbed another soldier, &#8220;deserved to die&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Military chiefs condemned his actions, but others praised them.<\/p>\n<p>The offence carries a sentence of up to 20 years, though prosecutors had called for Azaria to be jailed for between three and five years.<\/p>\n<p>Dozens of right-wing protesters had gathered outside the Tel Aviv Defence Ministry headquarters, where the hearing took place.<\/p>\n<p>Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said he would support any decision to pardon Azaria.<\/p>\n<p>The killing received widespread coverage after footage of the incident, filmed on a mobile phone, was shown on Israeli news programmes.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media-landscape has-caption full-width\"><\/figure>\n<figure class=\"media-landscape has-caption full-width\"><span class=\"image-and-copyright-container\"> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"responsive-image__img js-image-replace\" src=\"http:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/624\/cpsprodpb\/F566\/production\/_89022826_2dc1dba0-3850-4dd4-aaca-55fdf6d31243.jpg\" alt=\"A scene from the video showing Sgt Azaria raising his rifle at the wounded Palestinian\" width=\"976\" height=\"549\" data-highest-encountered-width=\"624\" \/><\/span><figcaption class=\"media-caption\"><span class=\"media-caption__text\"><em> A scene from the video showing Sgt Azaria raising his rifle at the wounded Abdul Fatah al-Sharif\u00a0 (<span class=\"image-and-copyright-container\"><span class=\"off-screen\">Image copyright<\/span> <span class=\"story-image-copyright\">AFP<\/span> ) <\/span><\/em> <\/span><\/figcaption><figcaption class=\"media-caption\"><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>It showed Azaria cocking his gun and firing at the head of Sharif, who was lying apparently incapacitated on the ground after being shot and wounded following the stabbing attack.<\/p>\n<p>The military court which tried Azaria dismissed his claim that he had acted out of fear that Sharif might have been wearing an explosive vest.<\/p>\n<p>The killing occurred amid a wave of attacks by Palestinians that had killed 29 Israelis over the preceding five months.<\/p>\n<p>Following the incident military chiefs and the prime minister came under fire from right-wing sections of society &#8211;
