{"id":4601,"date":"2016-12-29T05:09:50","date_gmt":"2016-12-29T10:09:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/?p=4601"},"modified":"2016-12-29T05:09:50","modified_gmt":"2016-12-29T10:09:50","slug":"last-defendant-fatal-indianapolis-house-explosion-gets-3-years","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/2016\/12\/29\/last-defendant-fatal-indianapolis-house-explosion-gets-3-years\/","title":{"rendered":"Last defendant in fatal Indianapolis house explosion gets 3 years"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"newsletter-embed\">\n<p>INDIANAPOLIS \u2014 A judge <a href=\"http:\/\/indy.st\/2iEG6rU\">sentenced<\/a> the final\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/crime\/2016\/12\/26\/richmond-hill-scars-still-remain\/95741858\/\">Richmond Hill<\/a>\u00a0defendant to three years for his role in the fatal 2012 explosion,\u00a0ending the long and costly prosecution.<\/p>\n<p>Glenn Hults, 50, will serve 1 1\/2\u00a0years in either prison or jail and six months in a work release program in the custody of Marion County Community Corrections, Marion Superior Judge Sheila Carlisle ordered on Wednesday. Carlisle suspended one year of the sentence\u00a0and ordered probation.<\/p>\n<p>Hults\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/crime\/2016\/11\/09\/final-richmond-hill-explosion-suspect-glenn-hults-pleads-guilty\/93547546\/\">entered a plea agreement<\/a>\u00a0in November to a felony charge of assisting a criminal in connection with the November 2012 explosion that killed two people, injured 13 others,\u00a0and damaged or destroyed dozens of homes in the neighborhood on\u00a0Indianapolis&#8217; southeast side. Prosecutors initially charged him with the more serious\u00a0felony of conspiracy to commit arson.<\/p>\n<p>Court documents had alleged that Hults, the last suspect to be charged in the case,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/crime\/2015\/04\/14\/th-suspect-arrested-richmond-hill-house-explosion\/25777687\/\">knew of the plot<\/a>\u00a0before his four co-defendants blew up the home of Monserrate Shirley, causing massive damage in Richmond Hill\u00a0and killing neighbors\u00a0John &#8220;Dion&#8221; Longworth and Jennifer Longworth.\u00a0 But Hults only admitted to failing to cooperate with police after the explosion, hindering the investigation by helping his co-defendants elude arrest for a time. He faced a sentence of six months to three years in prison.<\/p>\n<p>Carlisle said Hults only reluctantly took responsibility\u00a0for his role in the crime\u00a0and said he could have helped police and prosecutors resolve the case earlier if he had cooperated from the start.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Come on,&#8221; Carlisle told Hults during the sentencing hearing. &#8220;You know what you did.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Shirley, her boyfriend Mark Leonard, his half-brother Bob Leonard, and their friend, Gary Thompson, conspired to set fire to Shirley&#8217;s home to collect about $300,000 in insurance money. After several unsuccessful attempts, the plotters blew up Shirley&#8217;s home.\u00a0 Police were able to arrest Hults due to Shirley&#8217;s cooperation with police. She struck a deal with prosecutors in which they allowed her to plead guilty to\u00a0two felony arson conspiracy\u00a0counts in exchange for her testimony against her co-defendants.\u00a0Earlier this month, a judge sentenced Shirley to\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/2016\/12\/20\/richmond-hill-suspect-monserrate-shirley-gets-50-years\/95657520\/\">50 years in prison<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Since the explosion, residents and others have\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/crime\/2016\/12\/19\/richmond-hill-residents-ask-maximum-sentence-shirley\/95604234\/\">grappled with post traumatic stress disorder<\/a>, as well as their grief over the loss of the Longworth couple.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You chose Mark Leonard over the police department, over the whole neighborhood, knowing that the crime he committed killed two people,&#8221; Carlisle said.<\/p>\n<p>Hults&#8217; defense attorney argued that the defendant played no part in planning or executing the explosion.
