{"id":3420,"date":"2016-11-29T09:05:00","date_gmt":"2016-11-29T14:05:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/?p=3420"},"modified":"2016-11-29T09:05:00","modified_gmt":"2016-11-29T14:05:00","slug":"exiled-ukraine-president-viktor-yanukovych-appears-witness-court-protester-deaths","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/2016\/11\/29\/exiled-ukraine-president-viktor-yanukovych-appears-witness-court-protester-deaths\/","title":{"rendered":"Exiled Ukraine President Viktor Yanukovych Appears As Witness In Court Over Protester Deaths"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Ukraine&#8217;s exiled president, Viktor Yanukovych, has denied ordering police to shoot protesters as he appeared in court as a witness via videolink from Russia.<\/p>\n<p>Protests began in November 2013 after Mr Yanukovych decided to scrap a landmark deal with the EU in favour of closer ties with Russia.<\/p>\n<p>Over the following few months, more than\u00a0100 anti-Yanukovych demonstrators were killed in protests in Kiev&#8217;s Maidan Square.<\/p>\n<p>Dozens of them were\u00a0allegedly shot by police snipers who Ukrainian officials say received their orders directly from Mr Yanukovych.<\/p>\n<p>The pro-Kremlin leader fled to Russia days later.<\/p>\n<p>On Monday he spoke to a court in the Ukrainian capital where five former special forces officers stand accused of\u00a0fatally shooting the protesters.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking via videolink from a courtroom in Russia, he denied ordering the officers to fire on demonstrators, adding that he &#8220;could not have possibly given such orders&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Ukraine&#8217;s prosecutor-general told Mr Yanukovych he could yet face charges of treason in relation to the shootings.<\/p>\n<p>Mr\u00a0Yanukovych told the court he had been &#8220;surprised&#8221; by the protesters&#8217; feelings, saying there were &#8220;different provocations in December, January and February (that) made the situation worse&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>He added: &#8220;Radicals and those who manipulated them are guilty.
