{"id":31248,"date":"2026-08-30T04:45:02","date_gmt":"2026-08-30T08:45:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/?p=31248"},"modified":"2026-08-30T04:45:02","modified_gmt":"2026-08-30T08:45:02","slug":"zambian-opposition-leader-detained-by-police-over-treason-allegations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/2026\/08\/30\/zambian-opposition-leader-detained-by-police-over-treason-allegations\/","title":{"rendered":"Zambian opposition leader detained by police over treason allegations"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\"><b class=\"ssrcss-1xjjfut-BoldText e5tfeyi3\">Zambian opposition leader Brian Mundubile, who had gone into hiding after disputing the recent presidential election result, has been detained over allegations of treason.<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The official results from the 13 August poll showed that incumbent President Hakainde Hichilema won with a 60% share of the vote compared to Mundubile&#8217;s 38%.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The day after the vote, security forces raided a property in the capital, Lusaka, linked to Mundubile, killing a former cabinet minister and arresting a number of other politicians.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The authorities accused the opposition of planning an armed insurgency, which they denied.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Following the raid, Mundubile went to a &#8220;secure location under the protection of an international human rights body due to threats made against him&#8221;, his NRPUP party said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The opposition leader&#8217;s running mate Makebi Zulu was also taken into police custody on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The pair had taken refuge with the United Nations in the capital after security forces killed a former cabinet minister and arrested a number of politicians in a raid.
