They denied the charges and were not suspended.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The case against them was now been formally dropped at a court in the capital, Pretoria, after a review last month by the country&#8217;s chief prosecutor.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">South Africa&#8217;s police force has long been plagued by issues of political interference, alleged corruption and a seeming inability to effectively tackle high levels of crime.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">A major judicial inquiry into alleged police corruption, known as the Madlanga Commission, is currently under way.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">It was established last year by President Cyril Ramaphosa after a senior police officer alleged that organised crime groups had infiltrated the government.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-vxwoax-ComponentWrapper e1aon0op1\" data-block=\"links\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-126h8e-Spacer e1aon0op0\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-1gccci3-Stack e1y4nx260\">\n<ul class=\"ssrcss-94r6ik-Stack e1y4nx260\" role=\"list\">\n<li class=\"ssrcss-qzx51b-LinkItem e3eyuya1\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-1gccci3-Stack e1y4nx260\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-7zrqh4-LinkHeadline e3eyuya4\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/c39zygp0d8yo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span aria-hidden=\"false\">Top policeman shakes South Africa with explosive allegations about his boss<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-vxwoax-ComponentWrapper e1aon0op1\" data-block=\"text\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-126h8e-Spacer e1aon0op0\">\n<div data-testid=\"rich-text\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-nqezkk-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Speaking outside court in Pretoria after the withdrawal of the charges, Gen Khumalo expressed relief that the &#8220;truth at least is out&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Prosecutors had claimed that Dineo Mokwele was unqualified for the senior technical support services position she held within crime intelligence and labelled her a &#8220;token appointment&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Her appointment then came under scrutiny at the Madlanga Commission.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">It heard that Mokwele was more than qualified for the post and had about a dozen certificates to her name.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">In July, Andrea Johnson &#8211; the former head of a specialised unit within the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) tasked with investigating high level and complex corruption cases &#8211; appeared before the commission.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">She admitted that she was unaware of Mokwele&#8217;s qualifications and apologised for remarks made about her.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Gen Khumalo became the head of Crime Intelligence in 2022.
